Legends say that during the war, the use of metal was required for horseshoe repair and for other needs. The soldiers couldn't locate any metal in and around the city; then Guru Har Gobind blessed this city to be the city of iron. Since then the iron (metal) business has flourished in this region.

This was originally a walled town with four gates. One was near Modi Mills, another was near Munilal Om Prakash, the third near the present main post office
