The 2000 tournament was the first official competition which expanded to allow North American, African, Asian and Oceanic teams. Although deemed a success, the tournament was still heavily criticised in Europe as they felt the new teams were still not ready to take on their elite clubs, especially as Manchester United had been forced to withdraw from the prestigious FA Cup
