History

On 2 November 1908, the bus route number 8 was allocated to a previously un-numbered route operating between the Bush Hotel in Shepherds Bush and Seven Kings High Road in Ilford

. On 20 June 1912, Routes 8 and 25 exchanged eastern ends at Bank, so that from then on the 8 operated between Willesden

 and Old Ford. This situation continued, apart from various westward extensions of the route to Wembley

, until July 1993. At that time the 8 again was re-routed over the 25, but this time to Victoria, becoming a daily Victoria - Old Ford - Bow route, the same routing as the 1912 version of route 25. The western end of the route became 98.

On 27 June 2009 the 8's route changed yet again, with the removal of the Oxford Circus to Victoria section. This meant the route no longer served Green park or Hyde Park Corner. No change in frequency was made. The bus C2

 took over the withdrawn part. As a result of these changes, buses no longer turn on and off Oxford Street to and from New Bond Street/Davies Street. Davies Street and New Bond Street (north of Conduit Street) are no longer served by buses, but these streets are within a short walking distance of bus routes on Oxford Street or the C2 at Berkeley Square. The changes implement part of Transport for London
