The school was named after a member of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools

 Board, Linda Lentin. In October 1996, the Board had postponed a decision on whether schools should be named after active members of the Board and then later in the same month ruled against it. Following a change in membership of the Board in November 1996, the decision was made to allow the school to be named after her.

When Linda Lentin K-8 Center opened in 1998, it was just an elementary school catering for grades K-5.

The school was dedicated on 19 May 1999 and opened in November of that year.

In 2004, 6th grade was added to the school, with the school later taking 7th and 8th grade students. The enrollment went from 530 students to over 1,000 students after the new building was built.
