Young ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1971 Alberta general election

. He picked up the electoral district of Edmonton-Jasper for the Progressive Conservative party who also formed government in that election. In that election he defeated three other candidates to win the hotly contested race.

. His popular vote increased he ended up winning the electoral district in a landslide. He would be re-elected to his third term in the 1979 Alberta general election
