The first establishment goes back to 1763 with the creation of a village of Kolchugino. The extraction of coal started in 1870 but did not become really intensive until 1912 when there was an infusion of French capital. The agglomeration was renamed Leninsk in 1922, then Leninsk-Kouznetsky in 1924. It was granted town status in 1925. The city is entirely turned towards the extraction of coal. Many mines are within the limits of the city.
