The station consists of three platforms. Platform 1 (side platform
) consists of a large steel shelter stretched along the platform, while platforms 2 and 3 (island platform
) consists of a large brick building at the Werribee end of the station, housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket counter and toilets. A large Metcard
vending machine and a myki
recharge machine (both accepting notes, coins and EFTPOS) are located at the entrance to platform 1, while coin only Metcard
and myki ticket vending machines are located inside the waiting room.
There are two Metcard
ticket validators and two myki
fare payment devices at the entrance to platform 1, as well as four Metcard
validators and four myki
fare payment devices located inside the waiting area on the island platform.
At the Melbourne end of the station the tracks diverge, with suburban trains usually taking the single track
route via Altona, while Geelong and Warrnambool line trains, as well as some express Flinders Street
trains, take the double track
route via Galvin and Paisley
. A rail siding
that was located adjacent to the station has been removed as part of the works described below.
The Western standard gauge line
is to the west of the station, and is used by interstate freight trains, and The Overland passenger service from Melbourne to Adelaide
.
On 6 May 2008 the Government of Victoria
announced as part of the 2008–2009 state budget that Laverton station would receive a $92.6 million upgrade, including a new third platform, and tripling one kilometre of existing double track
between the junction to the Altona line and the station.
The first span of the footbridge was lifted into place in October 2009, with the completed bridge opened to public access on 9 February 2010.
