Kenneth Whyte is a Canadian
newspaper and magazine editor
. He has been publisher of the weekly Maclean's
newsmagazine since March 2005. He is also president of Rogers Publishing Limited.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. Whyte began his career in journalism as a sports reporter at the Sherwood Park News. He joined Alberta Report
as a reporter in the mid-1980s and later served as executive editor of the magazine. In 1994, Whyte was appointed editor of Saturday Night
, Canada's leading monthly magazine. In 1998, he was named editor-in-chief of the newly launched national newspaper National Post
. In 2003 Whyte left the Post and became a visiting scholar in media and public policy at McGill University
. He is a member of the board of governors
of the Donner Canadian Foundation, a senior fellow of Massey College
at the University of Toronto
, a trustee of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, a co-founder of the McGill Observatory in Media and Public Policy, and a governor of the Aurea Foundation.
Whyte joined Maclean's
at the start of its 100th year of publication. He is the first person in the history of the magazine hold the titles of editor and publisher. In 2011, he became president of Rogers Publishing Limited, which owns fifty-five magazines, including Chatelaine, Today's Parent, Canadian Business, Moneysense, and Hello! Canada.
In April 2009, Whyte's non-fiction book The Uncrowned King: The Sensational Rise of William Randolph Hearst was a finalist for the 2009 National Business Book Award. It was also nominated for the British Columbia's National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction
