The TV station was founded in 1967 as KEBS-TV. The station changed its callsign to the current KPBS in 1970.
KPBS-TV is not part of the famed "big three" group of Los Angeles network flagship stations (KCBS-TV

); its call letters merely express the nature of the station's programming and affiliation (KOCE
would be considered the Los Angeles "flagship" for PBS). PBS is collectively owned by its member stations.
Like Watertown, New York's WPBS-DT, KPBS-TV is a border station—in this case, serving viewers in both the US and Mexico.
At the time of the analog television shutdown, which took place on June 12, 2009, KPBS's digital signal remained on its pre-transition period channel 30. However, through the use of PSIP

as 15. KPBS had indicated that it might terminate analog service on April 30, 2009, in advance of the June 12, 2009 nationwide analog-digital conversation date. The station's website, however, states that KPBS continued analog transmissions until the June 12, 2009 mandatory full power TV station analog/digital conversion date. KPBS-TV broadcasts in 1080i
high definition.
