Hudepohl's Olympic accomplishments followed an impressive collegiate and prep swimming career. He was named National High School Swimmer of the Year in 1992 and won multiple NCAA championships while competing for Stanford University. He was also a member of two American record relay teams and part of a world record 400-meter freestyle relay team at the 1995 Pan Pacific Championships.

Joe Hudepohl is also responsible for one of the greatest swimming sets known to the swimming world. It was drawn up by his coach, but he made it famous by his sheer speed in the set. Joe Hudepohl was definitely one of the fastest people ever to have finished it. The set consists of:
