At the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, Cleveland won gold in the Men's 200m-metre Breaststroke, and the Medley Relay.

He is now the head swim coach at Newman Smith High School and Ranchview High School in Carrollton, Texas a suburb of Dallas. He currently is raising three children and is married to Kent Elaine Ashton.
He has one daughter named Hattie Fanning Cleveland and twins named Skyler Cade and Ethan Finley("Fin") Cleveland. Hattie was born on January 8, 2000; and the twins on April 22, 2008. His daughter, Hattie also takes an interest in swimming. Kent works at Hermes
