Humphreys is a Director of the Human Capital Project, a non-profit organisation that exploits the university education of poor Cambodian students. The program provides funding for university education for poor Cambodian students, but has been criticized for the terms of the agreement requiring students to pay back up to 65% of their after-tax income in perpetuity.
He has worked previously as a policy analyst for the Commonwealth Treasury, consultant for the Centre for International Economics, volunteer lecturer at Chea Sim Kamchaymear University (previously called Maharishi Vedic University) in Cambodia

) spoke at the festival of dangerous ideas on the idea of replacing the government aged pension system with a system of community welfare organisations. Humphreys was also a member of the steering committee for the festival in 2009 and 2010.
He was going to be the candidate for the Liberal National Party (LNP) in the seat of Griffith
for the 2010 Federal Election but was dumped by the LNP in unclear circumstances. Unnamed sources have suggested that it may have been linked to an alleged sexual encounter with Young LNP President Roderick Schneider.
