The Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Srinagar, affiliated to the University of Kashmir, is a premier learning Institute of the J & K State.The Government of Jammu and Kashmir finances the College on cent % basis both on plan and non-plan account. The administrative and the financial control lie completely with the Government. The services of the College employees are governed by the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Service Rules (JKCSR).

History

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir established this Institute in the year 1961 during the Prime-ministership of Late Bakhshi Ghulam Mohammed as an Autonomous Educational Institute with a view to offer higher education at both Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels in various disciplines of Science and Management studies .

Progress

The College during its history of over 48 years has emerged as the most prestigious College of the State a centre of quality education with highly qualified and experienced faculty and state of art, infrastructure and supportive facilities. In fact, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore (NAAC) has acknowledged the quality excellence of this College by accrediting it at B++ level in its Certificate issued on November 4, 2004; the Institutional score being 84.00 under the scale 80 85. The College has produced a number of luminaries of National and International repute in the field of academics, Medicine, Engineering, Information Technology, Agriculture, Business, Industry, Sports etc. Among its some well known alumni are Mr Mohammad Ishaq Qadri, Advocate General, J & K State; Prof Syed Fayaz Ahmad Shah, Registrar, University of Kashmir; Prof A .M Shah, Controller Examination, University of Kashmir; Dr A .G Bhat, Regional Director IGNOU; Mr. Gaznafar Hussain, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag; Tafazul Hussain, President Jammu and Kashmir Bank; Dr Imtiyaz Ali, Head Department of Community Medicine, SKIMS; Prof. M.D Sangami, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, University of Kashmir; Prof Mushtaq Ahmad Siddiqi, Head, Department of Immunology, SKIMS; Prof Khursheed Iqbal a well known Cardiologist, SKIMS and Prof. B A Shah, Secretary Board of School Education.

Location

The ICSC has got an enviable location. While entering the College premises, one beholds a beautiful view of the Koh-i-Maran hill on which stands the most renowned historical fort, Qila Hariparbat, built by the Emperor Akbar. The hill symbolizes the secular culture and religious tolerance of the people of Kashmir, as there exists on the hill the holy shrine of Hazrat-i-Sheikh Hamzah Makhdoom (RA) on the right, the temple of Sharika Bhagwati on the left, the Ram Mandir and Gurdwara at the foothills. The College is also surrounded by a number of other holy mosques namely Jammia-MasJld Snnagar, Masjid-i-Baba Adham (RA), Masjid-i-Mullah Akhoon Sahib and Masjid-i-Kanidevar. The surroundings of the College present a wonderful atmosphere of tranquillity required for higher research and academic pursuits. The vast campus is spread over an area of hundred kannals.
