Iris spuria is a species of the genus Iris
, part of a subgenus series known as Limniris. The slender and elogated leaves surround a purple flower. It is a beardless form, sometimes known as the Blue Iris. The subspecies
maritima is called Seashore Iris. Other subspecies include ssp. carthaliniae and ssp. sogdiana, treated as distinct species in older works.
The species is widely cultivated and hybridized for use in the garden. It is found in Europe, Asia and Africa.
It was first described in 1753 by Linnaeus, who described it in the Species Plantarum
as being German.
