The Institute of Mental Health in Belgrade , established in 1963, is the first social-psychiatric institution in the Balkans
. It is a tertiary care medical institution that performs specialized, consultative and stationed healthcare in the fields of adult psychiatry, adolescent psychiatry, addiction diseases, clinical psychology
, epileptic medicine, clinical neurophysiology, psycho-pharmacology, psycho-therapy, mental illness prevention, and the improvement and caring of mental health

The ideas for establishing the institute came about as a result of the worldwide enlightenment that psychiatry
was going through at that time. Social orientation was experiencing a strong growth, thanks to rapid development of psycho-pharmacological-therapy. The possibility of treating patients with medication and therapy has increased the efficiency of psychiatric institutions and has given the opportunity to psychiatric patients to be cured within the community. Patients are able to lead relatively normal lives while undergoing medical care.
On 18 November 2009, The Institute of Mental Health in Belgrade was inaugurated in the WHO
Collaborative Centre for mental health care by Serbian Minister of Health, Tomica Milosavljević
. After this nomination, WHO has appointed this institute for its Collaborative Center. Belgrade's Institute of Mental Health also publishes the articles for WHO

The director of the Institute is Dr scient. med.
Dušica Lečić Toševski, and the Assistant Director is Doctor Smiljka Popović Deušić.

and addiction diseases. The foundations of the work in these institutions are based in the ideas of social–psychiatric method, group work, team work and the rehabilitation and re-socialization of patients.

After the adoption of the project, whose creator is the architect Vladeta Stojaković, on 5 June 1960 the cornerstone of the Institute was placed. The Institute of Mental Health officially started to work on 14 April 1963 in the former socialist Yugoslavia.
