History

The bridge, completed in 1959, is 4223 feet (1,287.2 m) in length and 116.25 feet (35.43 m) in width, built as the widest bridge in Ohio. The Innerbelt Bridge replaced the Central Viaduct.
On November 13, 2008, all commercial truck traffic was banned from the bridge because it was deemed structurally insufficient after a review of a computer analysis. Trucks needed to follow Interstate 490

 (ODOT) reopened the fourth lane in each direction and permitted trucks to use the westbound roadway again; trucks were permitted eastbound again in mid-2010, although detour signage was retained to discourage trucks in that direction from using the bridge due to engineering and traffic flow concerns.

Reconstruction

The current bridge is to be demolished, with a new bridge built in its place for northeastbound-only traffic by 2017. In addition, a new parallel span is to be built, projected to open by Fall of 2013, as part of the Innerbelt Freeway rebuild. The latter, southwestbound, span is to be named the George V. Voinovich
