He held this job between April 2009 and October 2010. A lawyer by training and with some experience in legal practice, he started his political activity in 1995 to run for election in the Catalan Parliament http://www.parlament.cat/web
, where he remained for a very short time before jumping to national politics in the Spanish Parliament (Congreso de los Diputados Congreso de los Diputados). He was elected within the lists of CDC Democratic Convergence of Catalonia
in two consecutive terms, 1996–2000 and 2000-2004. In June 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament, where he joined the ALDE Group, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (2004–2009).
In 2009, following several debates with the leadership of his party on the status of Catalonia within Spain, and after accepting a high ranking job in the Spanish Government as head of the Film Agency (ICAA) he quitted Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC), and has remained an independent political figure afterwards.
