September 5, 2007	Apple releases the original iPod Touch.
October 10, 2007	JailbreakMe 1.0 is released. It is the first method to jailbreak both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. It involves downgrading from iPhone OS 1.1.1 to iPhone OS 1.0.2, jailbreaking, and upgrading back to iPhone OS 1.1.1.
January 27, 2008	The Italian computer hacker Zibri Eskobar finds a key to the system disk, which proves helpful in programming later jailbreaks.
February 26, 2008	Zibri Eskobar releases ZiPhone, the first tool that can jailbreak both the iPod Touch 1G and the newly-modified iPhone (often referred to as the iPhone 2G, though it technically is also a first-generation iPhone like the original).

August 18, 2008	The iPhone Dev Team releases QuickPwn, a Mac and Windows application that can jailbreak the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 1G tethered on iPhone OS 2.0 through iPhone OS 2.2.1.
September 9, 2008	Apple releases the original iPod Touch 2G (often referred to as the MB model, not to be confused with the MC model of the iPod Touch 2G released exactly one year later).
March 11, 2009	The iPhone Dev Team releases an untethered jailbreak, and the first jailbreak of any kind, for the iPod Touch 2G. The complex Windows-only method includes, among other things, the centerpiece program, Unofficialsn0w 2.0.
March 17, 2009	Apple releases iPhone OS 3.0, blocking all jailbreaks at that point for the time being.
April 12, 2009	The iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.3, which allows for an untethered jailbreak on the iPod Touch 2G on both Mac and Windows, making this the first method to jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G on a Mac. It only supported jailbreaking that device on iPhone OS 2.2.1.
June 19, 2009	Apple releases the iPhone 3GS. Hours later, the iPhone Dev Team releases PwnageTool 3.0 and Redsn0w 0.7.2, the first tools capable of jailbreaking iPhone OS 3.0 on all iPhones (except the iPhone 3GS) and iPod Touches.
July 3, 2009	George Hotz returns to the jailbreaking scene with his initial release of Purplera1n (initially only for Windows), the first tool capable of jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS.
July 5, 2009	George Hotz releases the Mac OS X version of Purplera1n, thereby giving Mac users their first way of jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS.
September 9, 2009	Apple releases iPhone OS 3.1, which again disables jailbreaking. On the same day, Apple releases the MC model of the iPod Touch 2G, which uses the same hardware as the new iPod Touch 3G that they also release on that day.
October 11, 2009	Shortly after Apple releases iPhone OS 3.1.2, George Hotz George Hotz George Francis Hotz , alias geohot, million75 or simply mil, is an American hacker known for unlocking the iPhone, allowing the phone to be used with other wireless carriers, contrary to AT&T and Apple's intent...  releases his jailbreak tool Blackra1n Blackra1n blackra1n is a program that jailbreaks versions 3.1, 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 of Apple's operating system for iDevices, known as iOS.The program uses a bug in the USB code of the firmware for iDevices, allowing unsigned code to be executed. Blackra1n uses this exploit to patch the firmware of the iDevice...  (initially only for Mac), the first method to work with the iPod Touch 3G. The jailbreak was untethered for all iDevices then available, except that it was tethered on the iPod Touch 3G.
October 13, 2009	The iPhone Dev Team releases PwnageTool 3.1.4. It can jailbreak all Apple iDevices on iPhone OS 3.1.2 except the iPod Touch 3G.
January 16, 2010	iH8sn0w releases the original version of Sn0wbreeze, a Windows-only program that is closely similar to the Mac-only PwnageTool. The original version is the first Windows method to jailbreak Apple iDevices on iPhone OS 3.1.2.
February 2, 2010	Apple releases iPhone OS 3.1.3, once again blocking jailbreaks. However, most iPhone and iPod Touch models could be downgraded. April 3, 2010	Apple releases the original Wi-Fi-only iPad.
April 26, 2010	George Hotz (Geohot) announces that he is working on a new untethered exploit, Limera1n, and registers the domain limera1n.com.
April 30, 2010	Apple releases the original Wi-Fi iPad that also includes GSM-based 3G networking support. (To avoid confusion on commonly-heard terms for these and future iPads, "iPad" in iPad and iPad 3G refers to first-generation iPads, and the second-generation iPads likewise use "iPad 2" for Wi-Fi and both the GSM and CDMA versions of the 3G-based iPad 2.)
May 2, 2010	Shortly after the iPad 3G release, Comex releases Spirit Spirit (iOS jailbreak) Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad running iOS 3.1.2 through 3.2. It was developed by Wii homebrew developer comex. Spirit allows users to install software not approved by Apple on their iDevices. It is available for the Windows, Linux, and Mac platforms... , the first jailbreak tool for the iPad. It works on all iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads running the latest iPhone OS at the time (3.1.3 for iPhones and iPod Touches, 3.2 for iPads), while untethered. It functions similar to Blackra1n Blackra1n blackra1n is a program that jailbreaks versions 3.1, 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 of Apple's operating system for iDevices, known as iOS.The program uses a bug in the USB code of the firmware for iDevices, allowing unsigned code to be executed. June 21, 2010	Apple releases iOS 4.0. Hours later, the iPhone Dev Team releases an updated version of Redsn0w, and in the following days, updated versions of PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze are released. These exploits allow jailbreaking of iOS 4.0 on all compatible iPhones and iPod Touches, and iOS 3.2 on iPads.
June 24, 2010	Apple releases the iPhone 4. The original version was only black, and only supported GSM-based networking. It is not to be confused with future iPhone 4 models, namely, the Verizon iPhone 4, a CDMA-based networking version that also debuted only in black on February 10, 2011. And also, on April 28, 2011, Apple released the white versions of both the GSM-based and CDMA-based iPhone 4, which function exactly similar to their respective black predecessors.
July 13, 2010	After several months of not releasing Limera1n, Geohot announces his retirement from the jailbreaking scene, leading some to speculate that the exploit had been hype.
July 16, 2010	Apple releases iOS 4.0.1 for all iPhones (iPod touches remained on 4.0), and iOS 3.2.1 for all iPads. These updates patched the Spirit jailbreak, which had been the first to jailbreak the iPad.

August 1, 2010	Comex releases the first publicly available jailbreak for the iPhone 4 called JailbreakMe 2.0 JailbreakMe JailbreakMe is a series of jailbreaks for Apple's iOS mobile operating system that take advantage of flaws in the Safari browser on the device, providing an immediate one-step jailbreak unlike more common jailbreaks, such as Blackra1n and redsn0w, that require plugging the device into another... . The jailbreak was activated by visiting a web page (JailbreakMe.com JailbreakMe JailbreakMe is a series of jailbreaks for Apple's iOS mobile operating system that take advantage of flaws in the Safari browser on the device, providing an immediate one-step jailbreak unlike more common jailbreaks, such as Blackra1n and redsn0w, that require plugging the device into another... ) on the device's Safari web browser. The jailbreak is applied onto the iOS device right from within the browser. This type of jailbreak had not been used since iPhone OS firmware 1.1.1 on first-generation iDevices. It was able to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2 through iOS 4.0.1 on all of the latest iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad models.
August 11, 2010	Apple releases iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone/iPod Touch and iOS 3.2.2 for the iPad. These upgrades added no new features, but closed the PDF Portable Document Format Portable Document Format is an open standard for document exchange. This file format, created by Adobe Systems in 1993, is used for representing documents in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems....  exploit, rendering the JailbreakMe.com method useless.
August 20, 2010	Apple stops signing firmware for iOS firmware released before iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone/iPod Touch and iOS 3.2.2 for the iPad. This forces users requiring a firmware restore to upgrade to iOS 4.0.2 (3.2.2 for iPad) firmware, which had patched vulnerabilities allowing jailbreaking. There again followed a period of several weeks in which there was no working jailbreak available for the iPhone 4 running the latest firmware.
September 1, 2010	Apple releases the iPod Touch 4G.
September 8, 2010	As soon as Apple releases iOS 4.1, the Chronic Dev Team announces they are working on a bootrom vulnerability in the latest iPhone and iPod Touch devices. This exploit is known as SHAtter. It has been confirmed to work on the iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, and iPad, which all contain the new CPU, S5L8930. The nature of SHAtter means that the devices would be jailbroken for life until Apple makes changes at the hardware level.
September 20, 2010	pod2g, who discovered the SHAtter exploit, announces he would no longer be working with the Chronic Dev Team.
September 23, 2010	iH8sn0w releases Sn0wbreeze 2, jailbreaking iOS 3.1.x and 4.0-4.0.1.However, it is a tethered jailbreak, and only worked on second-generation and third-generation iPhones/iPod Touches and first-generation iPads, not the iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4G.
October 1, 2010	Apple releases the Apple TV 2G.
October 7, 2010	The Chronic Dev Team announces the release date of the new jailbreak Greenpois0n for the iPod Touch 4G and iPhone 4 running on iOS 4.1, and iPad running on iOS 3.2.2. The jailbreak would be released on 10/10/10 at 10:10:10 AM, GMT. Greenpois0n was expected to be based on SHAtter.
October 9, 2010	Shortly before the planned release of Greenpois0n, GeoHot (George Hotz George Hotz George Francis Hotz , alias geohot, million75 or simply mil, is an American hacker known for unlocking the iPhone, allowing the phone to be used with other wireless carriers, contrary to AT&T and Apple's intent... ) comes out of retirement with the surprise release of Limera1n (initially only for Windows), which he had previously announced in April, but had never released. The exploit is the first capable of jailbreaking the iPhone 4 running on iOS 4.1 and iPad running on iOS 3.2.2, and was based on a second, previously undisclosed bootrom vulnerability. Additionally, Limera1n is the first tool capable of jailbreaking the Apple TV 2G (For the record, the original Apple TV was never capable of being jailbroken).
October 12, 2010	The Chronic Dev Team finally releases Greenpois0n (initially only for Windows), tweaked to use the Limera1n exploit rather than SHAtter. Their reasoning was that releasing the original SHAtter-based Greenpois0n would be "a complete waste of a perfectly good bootrom hole in light of Limera1n, and so it can be held until Apple closes Limera1n’s hole." Greenpois0n allows jailbreaking of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and iPod Touch 4G running on iOS 4.1, and the iPad running on iOS 3.2.2.

October 18, 2010	Greenpois0n RC4 is released, adding support for the iPod Touch IPod Touch The iPod Touch is a portable media player, personal digital assistant, handheld game console, and Wi-Fi mobile device designed and marketed by Apple Inc. October 20, 2010	The iPhone Dev Team releases PwnageTool 4.1, capable of jailbreaking the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, and Apple TV 2G running on iOS 4.1, and the iPad on iOS 3.2.2.
November 1, 2010	The iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.9.6b2, capable of jailbreaking the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, and Apple TV 2G running on iOS 4.1, and the iPad on iOS 3.2.2.
November 13, 2010	iH8sn0w releases Sn0wbreeze 2.1, capable of jailbreaking the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, and Apple TV 2G running on iOS 4.1, and the iPad on iOS 3.2.2.
November 22, 2010	Redsn0w 0.9.6b3 is released, capable of jailbreaking iOS 4.2.1 on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G, and iPod Touch 4G tethered, and the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G untethered. Limera1n support is also added, allowing custom packages to be installed along with the jailbreak itself.
November 28, 2010	PwnageTool 4.1.3 is released. It is capable of jailbreaking all previously jailbreakable models as well as changing the iPhone 3GS baseband to 6.15.00, the iPad 3G model's baseband from the iOS 3.2.2 firmware. Ultrasn0w is also updated to unlock this baseband as well, providing an unlock to any iPhone 3GS users who updated to iOS 4.1 before the baseband preservation feature was implemented.
November 29, 2010	Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 is released. No changes from the previous version are made, except it can now flash the 06.15.00 baseband on the iPad, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS.
December 3, 2010	Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 is released. It includes hacktivation to activate the iPhone and some bug fixes.
December 24, 2010	An untethered version of Redsn0w is released for Mac testers to jailbreak fourth-generation iPhones/iPod Touches on iOS 4.2.1, as well as the first-generation iPads. It had been planned that a Windows release will follow if feedback was good.
December 26, 2010	Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 is released as a beta test to untether iOS 4.2.1 for Mac users. This is only compatible with the iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch 4G. The jailbreak is still in an early beta phase and disables Bluetooth functionality on all devices due to sandboxing issues, and also crashes Skype upon launch.
December 27, 2010	Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 and 0.9.7b3 are released. Beta 2 fixes all the native app crashes (including Task switcher) and Beta 3 extends the fix made in Beta 2 over to the non-GUI programs too (so iTunes embedded videos are now working).
December 31, 2010	The iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.9.7b4 to testers.
January 9, 2011	The iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.9.7b5 to testers.
January 10, 2011	The iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.9.7b6 to testers. This patched the Bluetooth and Skype bugs caused by the 0.9.7b1 version.
January 21, 2011	The Chronic Dev Team releases a video showing a jailbroken iPhone 4 running on iOS 4.2.1 rebooting, which proves the jailbreak is indeed untethered via an updated version of Greenpois0n. However, some bugs still needed fixing, thus no release date had been announced yet.
January 28, 2011	The iPhone Dev Team announces through their alternate Twitter account, where they announce the beta news, that iOS 4.2.1 will be jailbroken via Monte through older iOS 4.1 IPSWs, and that the seventh beta will be published exclusively for Windows users to untether their 4th generation iDevices. However, the Dev Team noted that it would be a long process due to Windows utilizing the filesystem, instead of RAM, to apply the Monte files.
February 3, 2011	The Chronic Dev Team releases Greenpois0n RC5 for Mac, which is an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, and iPad on iOS 4.2.1. No saved SHSH blobs from any other firmware versions are required.
February 5, 2011	The Chronic Dev Team releases Greenpois0n RC5 for Windows. This version does not include support for the Verizon iPhone 4 only because it was not properly detected.
February 7, 2011	Greenpois0n RC5.4 is released, becoming the first tool capable of jailbreaking the Verizon iPhone 4.
February 10, 2011	Apple formally releases the Verizon iPhone 4, three days after it was initially jailbroken.
February 12, 2011	Greenpois0n RC6 is released, adding full support for the Apple TV 2G.
February 15, 2011	The iPhone Dev Team releases PwnageTool 4.2, which is able to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 devices such as the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS (all bootroms), iPhone 4 (AT&T & Verizon), iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, iPad, and Apple TV 2G.
February 15, 2011	iH8sn0w releases Sn0wbreeze 2.2, which is based on Greenpois0n RC5. It adds a new feature called "Baseband Preservation Mode", which allows the user to update to iOS 4.2.1 and keep the baseband 01.59.00, which means that iOS 4.2.1 can be both jailbroken and unlocked.
February 18, 2011	The Chronic Dev Team releases Greenpois0n RC6.1, which patches the issue preventing jailbroken iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches running iOS 4.2.1 from using the iBooks application.
February 20, 2011	iH8sn0w releases Sn0wbreeze 2.2.1, which allows for jailbreaking of all iOS 4.2.1 devices, including the Verizon iPhone 4 running on iOS 4.2.6, but fixes the iBooks DRM issue for all jailbroken devices.
March 4, 2011	An unofficial version of PwnageTool 4.2 is used to jailbreak all iOS 4.3 devices, including the Verizon iPhone 4. The jailbreak, however, is tethered, requiring users to reboot their device using PwnageTool.
March 11, 2011	Apple releases the iPad 2. It comes in three models: Wi-Fi only, and two models that add 3G networking (one that is GSM-based, and one that is CDMA-based).
March 13, 2011	iH8sn0w releases Sn0wbreeze 2.3b1, which allows for jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM model), iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, and iPad 1. This jailbreak, however, is tethered, requiring users to reboot their device using files saved on the computer. Also, this beta version appears to be very unstable and is lacking many important functions. On the same day, Comex posts a tweet about finding an exploit in the new iPad 2. He also posts a picture of it running Cydia.
March 20, 2011	iH8sn0w releases Sn0wbreeze 2.3b4, which includes an Ultrasn0w fix. This fix lets users of the iPhone 3GS and both models of the iPhone 4 to unlock (while preserving the baseband) their iPhones on the following basebands: 01.59.00, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00. Unluckily, users with iPhones containing basebands 02.10.04, 03.10.01, 04.10.01, 05.14.02, and 05.15.04 will still not be able to unlock, as Ultrasn0w is not fixed on those basebands. This version, however, is tethered for the iPhone 3GS with the newer bootrom and both models of the iPhone 4.
March 29, 2011	Apple releases iOS 4.3.1, which patches the exploit Comex had previously found in the iPad 2, well before a jailbreak tool could even be released.
April 3, 2011	The iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 and PwnageTool 4.3, which allow for untethered jailbreaking of all iOS 4.3.1 devices except the iPad 2. This is quickly followed by a new release of Sn0wbreeze on April 4.
April 5, 2011	Firecore releases Seas0npass, the first tool capable of jailbreaking the Apple TV 2G on iOS 4.3.1.
April 18, 2011	The iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.9.6rc14, which allows for untethered jailbreaking on all iOS 4.3.2 devices except the iPad 2, along with the jailbreak for iOS 4.2.7 on the Verizon iPhone 4. On the following day, Sn0wbreeze is updated to version 2.6.
April 24, 2011	The iPhone Dev Team releases PwnageTool 4.3.2, which works on all current iDevices except the iPad 2 IPad 2 The iPad 2 is the second and current generation of the iPad, a tablet computer designed, developed and marketed by Apple. It serves primarily as a platform for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games, presentations and web content, and is available in black or white... . Also, Ultrasn0w 1.2.2 is released to work on iOS 4.3.2.
April 30, 2011	Untethered jailbreaks for the Verizon iPhone 4 are released. For Windows users, it comes in the form of Sn0wbreeze 2.6.1. For Mac users, it comes by installing a tethered jailbreak from the latest version of Redsn0w, then in Cydia, in the http://cydia.pushfix.info repo, installing the Verizon Untether for 4.2.7 tweak.
May 4, 2011	iOS 4.3.3 (iOS 4.2.8 for the Verizon iPhone 4) is released by Apple. According to initial tests the untethered jailbreaks were still possible with these new firmwares. Shortly thereafter, the iPhone Dev Team published new versions of the jailbreaks.
May 6, 2011	The iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.9.6rc15 and PwnageTool 4.3.3, and iH8sn0w releases Sn0wbreeze 2.7. Redsn0w allows for an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.3. PwnageTool offers the same along with an unlock for iOS 4.3.3. Sn0wbreeze can do it all, capable of jailbreaking iOS 4.3.3 (iOS 4.2.8 for the Verizon iPhone 4) untethered along with the ability to unlock either firmware.
June 11, 2011	Apple releases the first beta to iOS 5.0, and less than 24 hours after its release, the hacker MuscleNerd jailbreaks it. At the last day of the WWDC 2011, MuscleNerd releases Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 to jailbreak iOS 5.0 Beta tethered with the Limera1n exploit. Sn0wbreeze is updated to 2.8b1 to support this firmware, and later updated again to 2.8b2 to untether iOS 5.0 Beta on the iPhone 3GS IPhone 3GS -Camera:The iPhone 3GS features an improved 3 megapixel camera manufactured by OmniVision. In addition to the higher megapixel count, it also features auto-focus, auto white balance and auto macro and is capable of capturing VGA video...  old bootrom with 24K exploit. June 24, 2011	Apple releases the second beta to iOS 5.0, offering more than a thousand bug fixes and improvements. This firmware also patches Gevey, Gevey ultra and Rebel SIM unlock with baseband 04.11.06 on the iPhone 4. Sn0wbreeze is updated to 2.8b3 to support iOS 5.0 beta 2 tethered (untethered for the iPhone 3GS old bootrom). When preserving unlockable or even non-unlockable basebands (like 01.59.00, 02.10.04, 03.10.01, 04.10.01, and 04.11.04), Sn0wbreeze unpatches this unlock. Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 is still working on 5.0b2 when pointed at 5.0b1. Comex updates JailbreakMe.com to a list of all the release day git commits ever since August 31, 2010, and a headline which says "It's been too long," hinting at a close arrival of the next JailbreakMe.
July 5, 2011	Comex releases JailbreakMe 3.0, which can jailbreak all iDevices, including the iPad 2, on iOS 4.3.3. This is after a July 2 leak forced him to hurry production.
July 15, 2011	Apple releases iOS 4.3.4, which patches the JailbreakMe 3.0 exploit.
July 16, 2011	Less than 12 hours after iOS 4.3.4 (iOS 4.2.9 for the Verizon iPhone 4) is released, the iPhone Dev Team jailbreaks it with Pwnagetool 4.3.3.1 custom bundles and Redsn0w 0.9.8b3. Both, however, are tethered jailbreaks, and both do not support the iPad 2.
July 25, 2011	iOS 4.3.5 (iOS 4.2.10 for the Verizon iPhone 4) is released by Apple. Though it patched a vulnerability regarding certificate validation, it did not patch the tethered Redsn0w jailbreak. The jailbreak, though, is still tethered in iOS 4.3.5.
August 6, 2011	Apple releases iOS 5 beta 5, followed by redsn0w 0.9.8b5 and later on Sn0wbreeze 2.8b5. The new version of Sn0wbreeze also hacktivates the phone (for unlockers), cancel the Beta timer (expiry date) the UDID developer check, and no longer isolates the baseband preservation mode,
August 18, 2011	Apple releases iOS 5 beta 6, followed by Redsn0w 0.9.8b6 "Jetblue edition" with bootlogos disabled, and Sn0wbreeze 2.8b6 with the same features of Sn0wbreeze 2.8b5. Both jailbreaks are tethered except for iPhone 3GS old bootrom with Sn0wbreeze.
October 12, 2011	Apple releases iOS 5, followed by Redsn0w 0.9.9b4 for a Tethered jailbreak (and later Semi-tethered) on non-iPad 2 and non-iPhone 4S devices and untethered jailbreak on old boot rom iPhone 3GS.
