Tollmann studied graphics between 1961 and 1968. From 1968 he worked as a graphic designer and artist, painting landscapes influenced by Max Ernst

 from 1970. In 1975 he started to use engineering processes and electronics in his work and exhibited in Germany, the Netherlands and France.

In 1996 he produced multimedia projects in collaboration with Artexpert, Cologne. In 2001 he started his collaboration with the Artforum Culture Foundation
