After the war, in 1966, he was promoted as commander where he commanded the destroyer ship, and was later upgraded to Captain

. He quickly rosed to the ranks, and, as Rear Admiral, became a commandant of Pakistan Coast Guard in 1971. During the time, Pakistan Coast Guard suffered the major human and infrastructure casualties as a result of successful Operation Trident commenced by the Indian Navy.

After the war, as many admirals were sacked, Rear-Admiral Ahmed commanded the Pakistan Fleet and Pakistan Coast, Headquarters. By the 1972, he became a senior naval official. In 1972, he was promoted by President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as Chief of Naval Staff when Judge Advocate General Branch of Pakistan Defence Forces had sacked last Commander-in-Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Muzaffar Hassan. Vice Admiral Muzaffar Hassan, along with the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Air Staff, were sacked by Judge Advocate General Branch by the order of then-civilian Martial Law Administrator President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in March 1972. He died in office in 1975.
