In 1980 Judge Bartle became Attorney General of Pennsylvania, a position he held until 1981, when he returned to private practice. In 1991 President
George H.W. Bush appointed Judge Bartle to the Eastern District. He became Chief Judge
in 2006 when former Chief Judge Giles' term expired. He assumed senior status on October 1, 2011.
