The entrance is near 40°45′5"N 74°44′9"W, on Hacklebarney Road. There is a parking area with picnic facilities and restrooms. A short trail with a set of stairs leads down to one of the tributaries of the Black River, the Trout Brook. The trails can be followed to the Black River.
The land was mined for iron ore during the 18th and 19th centuries, with the final mine closing in 1896, leading to economic devastation of the area. The land for a park was donated to the state in 1924.
