History

The land was purchased from the Oneida tribe

The town was first settled around 1787. One of the first settlements were in what is now known as East Guilford, by the Mercereau brothers (who were Revolutionary War spies for George Washington). They built a mill on Guilford Creek in Indian Orchard Falls, along the Catskill Turnpike.

Guilford was formed from the town of Oxford

 in 1813 as "Eastern." The name became "Guilford" in 1817. The town was called by an older name, "Fayette," for the early part of its history during the time it was in Tioga County

One of the most beautiful spots in Guilford is Guilford Lake, which was at one time called Guilford Pond. A tornado hit Guilford around Guilford Lake at the turn of the century, and knocked down tree limbs and trees.

However, Guilford is especially known for The Angels Inn, otherwise known as The Pillars. Unfortunately, this building in in desperate need of some tender love and care, however it is one of the most beautiful buildings in the area. It used to have a carved wooden angel that hung above the door, but it was sold in the 1950's. However, Guilford currently has a replica of the angel on display for those who want to see it.
