The airline launched its first flight from Shanghai to Amsterdam

The airline suspended operations on 18 August 2006 after its parent company, China Great Wall Industry, had sanctions imposed on it by the United States Department of the Treasury

. On 13 December 2006, it was announced that sanctions against Great Wall Airlines had been lifted, and that the airline would resume service in February 2007. The airline has resumed scheduled services to Amsterdam (six times weekly), Incheon (six times weekly) and Mumbai/Chennai (three times weekly). As of April 30, 2007 Great Wall Airlines have also launched scheduled service to Manchester

The airline operated to U.S stations including Seattle and Chicago at end of May, 2008. And started the service to Atlanta in 2009.
At beginning of year 2010, the stock(51%) which owend BASA has been transferred to China Eastern Air Holding.

In the first half year of 2011, the company was merged into China Cargo Airlines, together with another Cargo carrier, Shanghai Cargo Airlines(F4).

Right now, no more Great Wall Airlines' call sign and flight number. Three aircrafts leased from Singapore Airlines Cargo and Guggenhaim Aviation were still there. But the logo and livery will be replaced by China Cargo's soon.
