Grand Detour is the site where John Deere invented the first successful steel plow. Many of the village's initial residents came from Vermont
, and in the early years of the 20th century many artists were known to live here. Orson Welles
spent several summers here as a youth at his father's hotel, The Sheffield House. Speaking of Grand Detour in a discussion of "Citizen Kane" Welles said, "Where I do see some kind of Rosebud, perhaps, is in that world of Grand Detour. A childhood there was like a childhood in the 1870s... Grand Detour was one of those lost worlds, one of those Edens that you get tossed out of." Stan Hack
