Route description

"225" (as called by the locals) begins on the north side of Calhoun, spurring off US Highway 41. The first major intersection occurs approximately 1.25 miles along this route as "225" passes under Interstate 75, with a full north/south interchange at this location. Crossing over the Coosawatte River, "225" winds its way through north-central Gordon County until at roughly the 7.5 mile marker, it meets its second intersection, this time with Georgia State Route 136

in the community of Nickelsville, GA.

From here "225" enters Murray County and continues through the rural and largely un-developed southwestern portion of the county. State Highway 225's first major intersection in Murray County occurs with Georgia Highway 52 Alt. near the former county seat of Springplace and at the approximately 10 county mile marker or 18th mile of the highway. One and a half miles north of this intersection, "225" intersects with Georgia Highway 52 and US Highway 76, which run concurrently, at what is known by the locals as "Central". Georgia Highway 286 intersects "225" roughly three miles north of "Central" in the community of Woodlawn. Near the 30th mile of the highway, only 4.5 miles short of its terminus at the Tennessee

History

The stretch of Georgia Highway 225 through southern Murray County between the Gordon County line and four-way stop at Springplace is an extremely dangerous length of highway, with a plethora of serious motor vehicle accidents, including many fatalities, each year. Reasons for this include excessive speeds by drivers due to the lack of development and multitudes of bad intersections with county roads and private drive-ways. Unfortunately no plans are in the works to four-lane this stretch and driver responsibility will be the only way to ensure this road be taken off a list of one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the state.

The "Four-way" (the local term for the intersection of "225" and GA Alt. 52) has become a site of horrible traffic congestion during morning and evening commutes, causing traffic to sometimes be backed up for over a half-mile (note this may not seem like congestion, but for rural Murray County, this is one of the worst traffic spots). Plans are in the works to construct a "225 by-pass" which will spur off its namesake route near Springdale Estates and run parallel to the west of "225," by-passing the "four-way" at Springplace and continuing until its proposed terminus at GA Highway 52/US Highway 76. However these plans have been on GDOT's drawing board for over 15 years and until recently, these plans were continuely pushed back for higher priority projects across the state.

In the past few years, the stretch of "225" between "Central" and the Woodlawn community has seen explosive development, requiring a new redlight intersection at the junction with GA Highway 286. This is largely due to two new schools (Bagley Middle School and Woodlawn Elementary School) being built near this junction. A second redlight will most likely be added at "225's" intersection with county road Mt. Carmel Church Rd. due to congestion from the new North Murray County High School (first new high school in the county since the 1930s) being constructed there.
