Gamow (crater)
Encyclopedia
Gamow is a large lunar
crater
on the far side of the Moon
. It is located in the northern hemisphere
, to the southeast of the walled plain Schwarzschild
.
This is a worn and eroded feature, with a rim that has been battered and overlain by multiple impacts. Gamow V is attached to the western exterior, and the joined crater pair Gamow A and Gamow B overlie the northeastern side. The eastern rim is the most damaged section, while the rim to the west is free from impacts. The western inner wall does display a fine radial groove texture, but is otherwise nearly featureless. Near the mid-point is a palimpsest
, or ghost-crater feature consisting of just the rim projecting up through the otherwise relatively level surface.
Moon
The Moon is Earth's only known natural satellite,There are a number of near-Earth asteroids including 3753 Cruithne that are co-orbital with Earth: their orbits bring them close to Earth for periods of time but then alter in the long term . These are quasi-satellites and not true moons. For more...

Impact crater
In the broadest sense, the term impact crater can be applied to any depression, natural or manmade, resulting from the high velocity impact of a projectile with a larger body...

Sphere
A sphere is a perfectly round geometrical object in three-dimensional space, such as the shape of a round ball. Like a circle in two dimensions, a perfect sphere is completely symmetrical around its center, with all points on the surface lying the same distance r from the center point...

Schwarzschild (crater)
Schwarzschild is a large lunar impact crater that islocated in the northern part of the Moon's far side. The nearest craters of note are Seares to the northeast, and Gamow to the southeast....

Palimpsest
A palimpsest is a manuscript page from a scroll or book from which the text has been scraped off and which can be used again. The word "palimpsest" comes through Latin palimpsēstus from Ancient Greek παλίμψηστος originally compounded from πάλιν and ψάω literally meaning “scraped...

Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the etter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Gamow.Gamow | Latitude | Longitude | Diameter |
