(10 August 1819 – 11 June 1909) was a British army officer.
and as the senior officer at the Battle of Inkerman
in 1854 held the barrier for six hours. In 1860 he was appointed Commanding Officer
of the 8th Regiment of Foot back in the United Kingdom.
He went to India
in 1865 and became General Officer Commanding
the Mysore Division
of the Madras Army
. From 1870 to 1871 he was Quartermaster-General to the Forces
before returning to India to be Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army
. He became Commander-in-Chief, India
in 1876, a post he held until 1881, when he returned to the UK.
He was created a Field Marshal
in 1890.
