The islands were named after Eugénie de Montijo
, the wife of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French by French
sailor in 1850s. This name in Soviet period was not used. Again it uses after 1994.
The archipelago
consists of five large islands - (Russky
, Popov, Rikord
, Reyneke
and Shkot
) - and a lot of small islands - (Yelena and Ushi
) among them - islets and rock
s. The its highest point is Russkikh Mount (291 m) on Russky Island.
The population of the archipelago is 6,810 (2005). Three of four inhabited islands of Primorsky Krai are in this archipelago. Eugénie de Montijo Archipelago is under administration of Vladivostok.
