, Ernest Macalpine Armstrong was educated at the former Hamilton Academy
, subsequently graduating with First Class Honours in Physiology (1968) and with Honours in Medicine (1970) at the University of Glasgow
where he became a Lecturer in Pathology (1971–74) before entering General Practice at Connel
, Argyllshire in 1975, until in 1993 being appointed Secretary to the British Medical Association
in London. In 2001 Dr. Armstrong was appointed Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, serving in this post until 2005.
