He plays as a midfielder and made his debut as a professional player on 23 January 2008 in a match against PSV Eindhoven.
He made his debut for the Netherlands U-21 national football team in the qualifier for the UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship
against Liechtenstein, which the Netherlands won 3–0. Falkenburg scored the second goal.
In 2009 Falkenburg signed a 3 year contract that binds him to Sparta Rotterdam
until the summer of 2012. However, on June 16, 2010 Falkenburg signed a contract with 2009 Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar until 2014.
