The organization was founded in the belief that people everywhere are entitled to Equal Access to information and education and should have the opportunity to join the dialogue as both recipients and contributors of that information.

The mission, as stated by the organization, is to create positive social change for large numbers of people in the developing world by providing critically needed information and educations through:

- effective partnerships and community engagement,

- locally produced and targeted content

- the use of appropriate and cost-effective technology.

Ronni Goldfarb founded Equal Access in 1999 and is its Executive Director. She worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to create the Equal Access/UNDP Digital Broadcast Initiative and to launch an Asia Pacific Regional Information and Education Network, the Equal Access Asia Development Channel.
