History

Opened in 1954, the school was named after Elfed Hywel Lewis, the renowned bard and scholar who died in that year. In 1967 it became a Senior Comprehensive, serving a wide catchment area, including Hawarden, Saltney and Hope. Students at that time used transport provided by the Local Authority until secondary provision was extended more locally. The school became fully comprehensive in 1973, serving the community of Buckley, Drury and surrounding areas. Students from outside the normal catchment area who choose to attend the Elfed use public transport. The vast majority of students use bicycles or walk to school.

Set in over 30 acres (121,405.8 m²) of grounds, students are provided with many opportunities to participate in both curricular and extra-curricular activities.

The school has a reputation for providing wide-ranging curriculum options, including vocational subjects, through its work with a number of different partner organisations. Its stated purpose is to be an outstanding learning community, reaching out to parents and adult learners as part of Flintshire Local Education Authority

's programme of community learning.

The school’s ethos celebrates the rich cultural mix of the area. It is proud of its ambition for every student to succeed and has outstanding facilities for students with additional needs, including those with exceptional ability or talent. Welsh is learnt as a second language and is used frequently in school life.

There are excellent facilities for teaching and learning, including computer suites, workshops, a floodlit full sized all-weather pitch, football and rugby pitches, recently refurbished gymnasia and indoor swimming pool. Theatr Elfed is one of the largest such facilities in the County and is used for a variety of community events.

Academic performance

Ysgol Uwchradd Elfed High School is an outstanding learning community with high standards of student attainment and achievement, regardless of their ability and prides itself on being inclusive. During 2009-2010 the school exceeded some very challenging attendance and academic targets. The percentage of students achieving the Core Subject Indicator (English, Maths and Science) at the end of both Key Stages 3 and 4 has increased significantly in recent years.

In 2011, 79% of students achieved 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C. The school is internationally renowned for its sixth form debating teams, winning numerous national and international honours in recent years. At Key Stage Three (Years 7-9), Elfed performs well above the national average. There is academic improvement for those students who stay into sixth form and the school has an exemplary record of student progress into Further or Higher Education Institutions of their choice or employment.

The school has a strong tradition of developing students' social, communication and teamworking skills. Students are encouraged and supported to benefit from opportunities to take part in the many extracurricular clubs and activities such as sport, music, debating, exchange visits and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Students are very proactive and have organised many successful charity fundraising events such as a concert in aid of Breast Cancer Research. The School Council has a significant influence on the culture of the school and has successfully applied for the funding of a variety of projects such as a cycle store and puffin crossing.

The school has a happy and caring atmosphere, high standards of behaviour and excellent opportunities for attainment and achievement in a wide range of areas (academic, social and vocational) at all levels of 'ability' and in all age groups. There are strong traditions in music, drama, debating and competitive sport. Many students take part and succeed in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

The support of governors, parents and carers are fundamental to the school’s success, working together with the students, teachers and support staff to create an outstanding learning community.
