Florey was created at the electoral redistribution of 1969 as a safe seat for the Australian Labor Party
, and was first contested at the 1970 state election
. It was held comfortably by the party for more than twenty years before its shock fall to the Liberal Party of Australia
at the 1993 election, amidst a landslide result caused by the fallout from the collapse of the State Bank of South Australia
. The effect was short-lived, however, and Florey was subsequently regained by Labor at the 1997 election with a sizable swing, and more so at the 2006 election.
