Throughout the 1950s former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt
embarked on a countless number of national and international speaking engagements, continued to pen her newspaper column, and made appearances on television and radio broadcasts. Roosevelt averaged one hundred and fifty lectures a year throughout the fifties; many of which were devoted to her activism on behalf of the United Nations
. On May 6, 1959, Roosevelt spoke to a convocation in Assembly Hall at Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University
) in Muncie, Indiana
. According to newspaper accounts, an estimated 1,500 people, including Ball State students, faculty, administrators, community people, and public school students heard Mrs. Roosevelt speak on the topic “Is America Facing World Leadership?"
Mrs. Roosevelt warned those in attendance against complacency and stressed the urgency of understanding other peoples of the world. "This is what it means to face world leadership. The government cannot do it for us. Many of us do not even know the whole of our own little communities. It would help us all over the world to understand people," she said.
A small reception in the West Lounge of the Student Center followed at approximately 3:15 and then Mrs. Roosevelt held a press conference in the East Lounge at about 4:00.
Mrs. Roosevelt warned those in attendance against complacency and stressed the urgency of understanding other peoples of the world. "This is what it means to face world leadership.
