Eggbuckland is a predominantly 1970s suburban residential area within the city of Plymouth
in the county of Devon
, England. It was once a small village

Bocheland is of Saxon
origin and means "Royal land held by charter". The Domesday Book
of 1086 recorded that this manor
was held by the King, William of Normandy, but was granted to the Saxon Heche or Ecca, thus the land was known as Heche or Ecca's Bocheland. This was the site of a Saxon church which was replaced by the present church of St Edward in 1470. The village was held by the Royalist Cavalier
s during the Civil War
against the Parliamentarian Roundheads
and was badly damaged.
Over time the name has been corrupted and by 1685 was Egg Buckland. By 1902, it was one word - Eggbuckland although the older usage is still seen and heard around the city.
The suburb is home to Eggbuckland Community College and several primary schools. Olympic diver Tom Daley
attended the college until moving to another local school in 2009, allegedly because he was bullied at Eggbuckland, although his studies at Eggbuckland enabled him to obtain 1A and 8A* grades in his GCSEs.
Alternative-pop band Panda Bear Jones
recorded their first EP in Eggbuckland . Eggbuckland also provides the name of their website as well as being the setting for much of its fictional content.
Eggbuckland or Egg Butty Land actually goes back to when the Round Heads chased Oliver Cromwell into the local church. all wanted there eggs the same shape as there heads and just boiled but Oliver Cromwell wanted to put a fried egg in his Butty. The people of the village thought this was a brilliant idea and whilst he was taking refuge in the church the all made egg buttys and charged the roundheads flourishing there buttys and chasing them off. Hence Egg Butty Land was formed
