Eastport-South Manor School is a school district
that serves parts of both Brookhaven
and Southampton
Townships in eastern Suffolk County
, New York
. Commonly known as "ESM", the district serves the hamlets of Manorville
and Eastport
, as well as portions of the hamlets of Speonk and Mastic.
The total enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year was 4002 students.
These two districts, along with several others, participated in a study in the mid-1990s to determine the feasibility of combining the many local districts into one centralized district. Proponents suggested that this would benefit the schools through lower central administration costs, and would allow significantly better programming for students, since a combined district would have a much higher enrollment than any of the individual districts. Further, the area covered in the scope of the study had experienced significant growth, particularly in Manorville, which had doubled the population in a span of only ten years. Finally, neither South Manor UFSD nor East Moriches
UFSD (a nearby district that also participated in the study) had high schools of their own, and were paying costly tuition to send their students to other high schools.
Ultimately, only Eastport and South Manor decided to combine to create a new district.
The central administration office is located at 149 Dayton Avenue, Manorville, NY 11949. The former district superintendent was B. Allen Mannella.
A 2010 survey by Newsday reported that the Eastport-South Manor School District was one of twelve schools on Long Island that was "particularly well-run, with well-developed financial policies, effective internal controls, and well-managed operations".
Before the merger, Eastport's mascot was the Duck, paying tribute to the large local duck farming industry, due to which Eastport was commonly referred to as "the duck capital of the world". The mascot of the South Manor school district was the Mustang.
ESM is now currently one of the largest high schools on Long Island with over 4,000 students as of 2011.
Before the two school districts merged, South Street School and Dayton Avenue School were the two schools of South Manor UFSD, serving grades K-9. Eastport Elementary was known as Eastport High School, but served all thirteen grades in one building. It was the only school in the former Eastport UFSD.
Many division titles and championships have also been won for the school in various sports, including the school's winning of the first ever Long Island Championship Game for boys volleyball in 2010.
In 2011, the Eastport-South Manor boys cross-country, boys soccer, girls soccer, boys golf, boys volleyball, and girls volleyball teams all earned playoff spots and league-wide recognition for outstanding performances. ESM Boys' Cross-Country and Boys' Volleyball both took home league championships in 2011; the first league title in school history for cross country and boys' volleyball's second title in a row.
Eastport-South Manor teams are also regularly recognized by Section XI for its top scholar-athletic teams and many of the teams are given the sportsmanship award.
In honor of the school mascot, the ESM gymnasium is dubbed the "Shark Tank".

Before the two school districts merged, South Street School and Dayton Avenue School were the two schools of South Manor UFSD, serving grades K-9. Eastport Elementary was known as Eastport High School, but served all thirteen grades in one building. It was the only school in the former Eastport UFSD.
Theatre
The school district is well known for its excellence in stage productions. Eastport South Manor has one of the most unique theatre programs in the United States. The founder of the program, Mr. Minutillo has been working some 30 years to create the program. Classes include Theatre Arts I,II,III, Senior Theatre Lab, Stagecraft I,II, and III. The theatre facilities include a black box theatre capable of holding 250 audience members, a main stage theatre with near 1000 seats, state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, a booth, costume building facilities, dressing rooms, and scene shop. Several shows are put on in the Black Box stage. Some of which include student-written work from the theatre arts III "repertoire" class, a puppet show to raise awareness of special education in the school district, as well as an annual senior showcase. The main theater is used for many events, several times a week during the day and after. Day to day activities may include assemblies, conferences, seminars and ceremonies. The theatre provides a venue that is adaptable for almost every occasion. 2 shows are put on a year on the Main Stage. While they are performed by students, the level of dedication from all members give students the impression they are working professionally. In the fall there is a drama or comedy, and in the spring, a musical.
