East Orange was originally incorporated as a township
by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature
on March 4, 1863, from portions of Orange town
, and was reincorporated as a city on December 9, 1899, based on the results of a referendum held two days earlier.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,346, and the median income for a family was $38,562. Males had a median income of $31,905 versus $30,268 for females. The per capita income
