The Districts of Georgia refer to the second-level administrative regions of Georgia
in western Asia. The 1-st level divisions of Georgia
(9 region
s and 2 autonomous republics
) are divided into 72 districts (municipalities) and cities.
Under the Soviet Union
, when they were known as raion
s, Georgia contained the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic (Abkhazia
), the Ajarian Autonomous Republic (Ajaria), and the South Ossetian Autonomous Region
. Abkhazia and Ajaria remained and in 1995, South Ossetia was renamed Tskhinvali and repartitioned with the districts. However, today, due to separist movements and internal conflict, South Ossetia and Abkhazia claim autonomy. However these are recognized by very few nations as independent nations so all districts are listed below:
