David Nicolle worked for the BBC Arabic Service before getting his MA at the School of African Oriental Studies. He gained a PHD in Edinburgh University. He married an American, Colette Giroux in 1976; they have a son Frederick Joseph ("Fred", born 1982) and a daughter Antoinette Laura ("Nette", born 1985). He now lives and works in Woodhouse Eaves
