On May 19, 2009 Torres was one of three candidates vying for three open seats, and was elected with 820 votes, defeating an incumbent by eighteen votes. He became the youngest elected official in the history of New Paltz, New York, and the youngest Latino elected to public office in the history of New York State. He was nineteen years and eight days old.
. This was largely due to his retrieval of funds from the sporting apparel featuring New Paltz High School's name and colors sold at Olympia Sports. Since then over $200,000 has been donated to some two hundred school districts in the North East.
