In 1979 he started a wholesale petroleum distribution company called Carolina Petroleum Distributors. The company grew from a statewide distributor to regional. He also owned a chain of convenience stores called Petro Express.

Racing career

He began racing in 1992, and he founded Shaver Motorsports. He competed in ARCA, SCCA, and the NASCAR Busch Series. He retired from racing in 2006 but continued to be an owner in ARCA, developing new drivers for bigger teams such as Joe Gibbs Racing

Death

Less than one year before his death (on January 30, 2006) he was quoted saying "I’m in the best shape I’ve been in 15 years, and I’m ready to go." He died of cancer on January 2, 2007, aged 56.
