Construction of the statue began on 12 July 1987, and was completed 20 November 1994. The statue was designed by César and Wálter Terrazas Pardo, and was modeled after Christ the Redeemer

Upon its completion in 1994, the statue became the largest statue of Jesus Christ in the world, surpassing the statue it was modeled on. The height of the statue is 34.2 metres (112.2 ft), on a pedestal of 6.24 metres (20.5 ft) for a total height of 40.44 metres (132.7 ft). It weighs approximately 2200 tonnes (2,200,000 kg). The head of the statue is 4.64 metres (15.2 ft) tall, and weighs 11850 kilograms (26,124.8 lb). The arms of the statue span 32.87 metres (107.8 ft). The Cristo sits on top of a hill to the east of the city of Cochabamba. The left hand points to the South, and the right points to the North.
