Court is a municipality
in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton
of Bern in Switzerland
. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura
(Jura Bernois).
Court has an area, , of 24.62 km² (9.5 sq mi). Of this area, 8.44 km² (3.3 sq mi) or 34.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 14.76 km² (5.7 sq mi) or 60.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.14 km² (0.44015646079549 sq mi) or 4.6% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.03 km² (7.4 acre) or 0.1% is either rivers or lakes and 0.21 km² (0.0810814533044324 sq mi) or 0.9% is unproductive land.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.7%. 56.0% of the total land area is heavily forested and 3.9% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 4.1% is used for growing crops and 8.8% is pastures and 21.3% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.
Court is a ribbon village
in the eastern portion of the Vallée de Tavannes
and along the entrance to the Court Canyon through which the Birs
River runs. It also includes about a dozen isolated farm houses in le Chaluet, on Graitery, on Mont Girod and in Montoz.
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP
which received 37.1% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS
(29.9%), the FDP
(15.7%) and the CSP
(6.2%).
The age distribution of the population is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 24.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 56.1% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 19.6%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated.
