title of nobility, granted by a decree issued by King Philip I of Portugal
, on 10 February 1583, to Dom
João Rodrigues de Sá.
This family also acquired the marquisate of Fontes
in 1659, which was exchanged by the marquisate of Abrantes
in 1718.
By a special decree of King John V of Portugal issued in 24 June 1718, Count of Penaguião became a title automatically granted to the Marquis of Abrantes'
heir.
