History of the journal

Clinical Cancer Research was first published in January 1995 and its mission was to publish original articles describing clinical research on the cellular and molecular characterization, prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of human cancer. Also, part of its mission since then has been to develop an educational function by offering information of interest to basic scientist
Scientist
A scientist in a broad sense is one engaging in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge. In a more restricted sense, a scientist is an individual who uses the scientific method. The person may be an expert in one or more areas of science. This article focuses on the more restricted use of the word...

The AACR decided to publish this journal to respond to the need to unite research exploring clinical applications of the molecular revolution in the understanding of cell growth
Cell growth
The term cell growth is used in the contexts of cell development and cell division . When used in the context of cell division, it refers to growth of cell populations, where one cell grows and divides to produce two "daughter cells"...

but also from the international research community. In 1998 the number of manuscripts submitted had risen from 500 in the first year to almost 800. The journal reported an acceptance rate of 52% at that time. With the aim to publish only papers of high quality, the Senior Editors agreed to increase the stringency of review.

There is a lot that we still do not know about cancer and medical technologies have changed the way we look at this disease, therefore, the proposed areas of research for this journal have been helpful to support new research. The areas that were defined at the beginning included subspecialties of clinical oncology including medical and hematological oncology, radiation therapy
Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy , radiation oncology, or radiotherapy , sometimes abbreviated to XRT or DXT, is the medical use of ionizing radiation, generally as part of cancer treatment to control malignant cells.Radiation therapy is commonly applied to the cancerous tumor because of its ability to control...

Since its beginnings, Clinical Cancer Research has been focused on publishing innovative clinical research and translational research which bridges the laboratory and the clinic. One of the main interests of Clinical Cancer Research is on clinical trails that evaluate new treatments together with research on pharmacology and molecular alterations or biomarkers that predict response or resistance to treatment. It therefore reports those new studies that can transform research findings into actual clinical interventions in the management of both cancer patients and individuals at risk of developing cancer.

Another priority for Clinical Cancer Research is laboratory and animal studies
