. The population was 13,209 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1998, Clayton merged with the remainder of Montgomery County's Randolph Township.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.

In the early 1930s the novel's male protagonist, the controversial architect Howard Roark, gets a contract to build in Clayton the (fictional) Janer's Department Store, a five-storey building. Later on Roark's beloved, Dominique Francon, comes seeking him there, and feels that in a sense Clayton "belongs to her more than to any of its inhabitants" because her beloved is there.
The book presents Clayton as the archetype of "Middle America", the polar opposite of the cosmopolitan New York City
