by Sicilian geometer Giovanni B. Guccia in 1884. It began accepting foreign members in 1888, and by the time of Guccia's death in 1914 it had become the foremost international mathematical society, with approximately one thousand members. However, subsequently to that time it declined in influence.

Publications

Rendiconti del Circolo Matematico di Palermo (Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo), the journal of the society, was published in a first series from 1885 to 1941 and in a second ongoing series beginning in 1952. It is currently published by Springer Science+Business Media

Influential papers published in the Rendiconti have included the introduction of normal number
Normal number
In mathematics, a normal number is a real number whose infinite sequence of digits in every base b is distributed uniformly in the sense that each of the b digit values has the same natural density 1/b, also all possible b2 pairs of digits are equally likely with density b−2,...

Plancherel theorem
In mathematics, the Plancherel theorem is a result in harmonic analysis, proved by Michel Plancherel in 1910. It states that the integral of a function's squared modulus is equal to the integral of the squared modulus of its frequency spectrum....

Carathéodory's theorem (convex hull)
In convex geometry Carathéodory's theorem states that if a point x of Rd lies in the convex hull of a set P, there is a subset P′ of P consisting of d+1 or fewer points such that x lies in the convex hull of P′. Equivalently, x lies in an r-simplex with vertices in P, where r \leq d...
