The CCCAN Championships are held every odd year, and began in 1960. The 2009 CCCANs were originally awarded to Cartagena, Colombia; however, in late 2008, the city announced it could not host the championships. In early 2009, Mexico came forward to host the event, however, after the outbreak of the H1N1 flu a new venue was sought and the championships were again relocated, this time to Barquesimeto.

In addition to CCCAN members, South American countries which border on the Caribbean have also participated in the championships, including Suriname
