Castel Campagnano is a small agricultural center on the right bank of the River Volturno, near Caserta. There are hills surrounding full of vineyards, olive trees and dense vegetation. The River Volturno represents a place of recreation for pleasant walks and picnics. Near the village there is also Squille, a village located in the south of the municipal area. Today, Castel Campagnano is a place where you can find farms, small industries, tourism, but people who live here or visitors can have moments of peace and tranquility.

The Castle – Aldi & Abbamondi Palace

Around the church of Sant’Angelo, the village has the form of a shaped ring, placed on the hill, the highest point defended by a castle. At bottom of town, is the Parish of St. Mary of the Snow. The present building was renovated in 1753, has a single nave. Decorations, all related to later periods in the restoration of 1753, is between a baroque and neoclassicism. On the right side of the Parish are the Aldi Palace (municipal property) is of great value to the portal, access to the courtyard (dating from late ‘600) and the beautiful stucco frames of windows floor. There is also the Abbamondi Palace. Under the courtyard there is a large tank, then used as a cellar, aims to transform the working tuff served to erect the building.

The Church of Sant’Angelo

In the south of the ancient village of Castel Campagnano, near the eighteenth century was discovered a church that is identified with the church of Sant’Angelo. The church of Sant’Angelo is still certified for 1326 and for 1464 as a chapel for the church of St. Peter. Probably in 1700 with the construction of the “Palazzo Ducale”. The church is supported by three pillars . The Altar was placed at the east wall, which is richest in paintings. On the right wall, top, is a prominent painting of the Madonna Enthroned with the child on the legs. On the left wall, there is a painting of St. Nicholas of Bari and the remains of a wider pictorial cycle, Sant’Angelo, ancient iconography clearly visible because it conforms with his left hand supporting a globe. The presence of this majestic figure allows us to assign the church in Sant’Angelo. On the back wall, on the left is a painting of Christ surrounded by two angels with a sword and other saints with a book.

Wine And Oil Festival

In the charming village of Castel Campagnano an event organized and promoted by the Pro Loco and the Town Council of Castel Campagnano to celebrate and enjoy two pearls of the table: the delicate extra virgin olive oil obtained from the variety “Caiazzana” and the wine “Pallagrello”. During the festival you can taste wines or attend the conference-debate “Pallagrello between history and future, and the Doc: State of the art” with the participation of authorities and experts. In addition, there are musical performances, an exhibition of photographs and paintings, exhibitions of handicrafts and a shuttle to visit the historical cellars. The Festival lasts two days exactly Saturday the 21st of June and Sunday the 22nd. On Saturday you can taste the farmer’s wine; in the late afternoon there is a Conference-debate called Pallagrello. At about 8:00 you can have a special dinner tasting wine and stay until late at the music show.

The Patron

Inside the Church of Castel Campagnano there is a statue of the patron saint of the village. The statue is dedicated to the cult of Our Lady of the snow and refers to the miracle of 5 August 348 AD in the night when the snow appeared on the Esquiline Hill in Rome. The excavation site was a sign of snow where the Virgin wanted a temple was erected in his honor. This temple is now the grand and magnificent Basilica of St. Maria Maggiore. To commemorate this event, Castel Campagnano, during the feast of Our Lady of the snow held on August 5, during the solemn Mass in the church there is a shower of white flakes dropped from the dome.
